SABPA Board of Directors Election

Background: The SABPA Board of Directors(BOD) is the governing body that oversees all activities of the SABPA organization. There are twenty-one (21) board directors serving a three-year term. In 2018, there are five (5) open seats on the BOD for candidates seeking election.
Eligibility: An active SABPA member who possesses a high standard of integrity, leadership skills, and teamwork spirit, and has served on one SABPA committee for at least one year, made significant contributions to SABPA and demonstrated a long-term commitment to SABPA.
Online election:
  • Go to the voting website by clicking the link 2018 SABPA BOD Election.
  • On the first webpage, enter your name and email used previously for SABPAevents/activities, and click “next”.
  • On the second webpage, click “Information” under the photo of each candidate to read more about the candidate; select up to five (5) from seven candidates; click “Cancel” (it will appear after the candidate is selected) to de-selected the candidate; click “Finish voting” to complete your voting process.
  • The voting deadline is midnight August 10, 2018.

Speakers:
John L. Wood is the Robert A. Welch Distinguished Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry at Baylor University. He is also a Cancer Prevention Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT) Scholar and an Associate Editor for Tetrahedron Letters.

Dr. Wood received a B.A. degree from the University of Colorado in 1985 and a Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania in 1991. He then moved to Harvard University as an American Cancer Society postdoctoral fellow and continued studying natural products synthesis in the laboratories of Stuart Schreiber. He joined the faculty at Yale University in 1993 as an assistant professor and was promoted to full professor in 1998. In 2006, he joined the faculty at Colorado State University as the Albert I. Meyers Professor of Chemistry.  In 2013, Wood moved from Colorado State to Baylor.  In the words of Dr. Elizabeth Davis, executive vice president and provost at Baylor University, “Dr. Wood is an outstanding scientist and educator. He has an impressive academic research career and a great reputation as a teacher and mentor.  Dr. Wood has a passion for chemistry, and his work promises to push forward the frontiers of cancer research.”

Jinglan Zhou, PhD, Research Fellow I, Vertex Pharmaceuticals Incorporated

Dr. Jinglan Zhou obtained a B.S. and M.S. in chemistry from Sichuan University, China. After earning a Ph.D. from Auburn University in 1997 under the direction of Prof. Philip Shevlin, Jinglan joined CombiChem in 1998 which was acquired by DuPont Pharmaceuticals, BMS and Deltagen, respectively. Jinglan then spent a year at Anadys Pharmaceuticals and moved to Vertex Pharmaceuticals in 2004 where she is currently a Research Fellow I. During her career at Vertex, Jinglan has contributed to the advancement of >10 clinical candidates in the areas of cystic fibrosis and pain. Jinglan was a key member of the chemistry team that discovered Ivacaftor (VX-770), Lumacaftor (VX-809) and Tezacaftor (VX-661), the three marketed drugs for the treatment of cystic fibrosis. Together with her teammates, Jinglan received the Heroes of Chemistry award from American Chemistry Society in 2013 owing to her contributions to Ivacaftor, the first medicine to treat the underlying cause of cystic fibrosis. Jinglan is an author/inventor on over 45 publications/patents.

About SABPA
Sino-American Biotechnology and Pharmaceutical Professionals Association (SABPA) is an 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization founded in early 2002 by professionals and scholars from the Chinese community in San Diego. In 2005, we expanded to Orange County and Los Angeles. We invite all scholars, professionals and entrepreneurs of any origin who are working in, engaged in, or interested in the biotech and pharmaceutical industry in Southern California to join us as a member of SABPA.
