2. Season's Greetings from SABPA Chair and President

This is the first holiday season since SABPA's inauguration six months ago. We warmly wish you a wonderful Holiday Season and a very Happy New Year!

3. Congratulation to Perlan Bioscience

Perlan Therapeutics, Inc. won UCSD CONNECT's 15th annual Most Innovative New Product (MIP) Awards. This award recognizes the important discoveries that are occurring in San Diego's biotech/life sciences community. This year's seven winners were chosen by a distinguished panel of judges from a field of more than 130 companies. Perlan received the Award for ColdSol(TM), a daily nasal spray being developed for the prevention and treatment of the common cold caused by human rhinovirus. Dr. Fang Fang, Vice President and co-founder of Perlan Therapeutics, Inc., also serves as a board member of SABPA.

4. Local Symposium: The Third Ray Wu Society Meeting

The Third Ray Wu Society (RWS) Meeting will be held from Dec. 27 to Dec. 30, 2002, at the Hilton Hotel in La Jolla, CA. RWS is a non-profit professional organization of life science. Primarily composed of Chinese natives, at home and abroad, the society requires that its members to have achieved a certain level of career establishment, such as principle investigator (PI) or projector leader (PL). The mission of RWS is to promote the advancement of the life sciences by providing Chinese scientists a platform of professional interactions and collaborations with their peers of other nationalities. The society is also devoted to facilitate the development of life sciences within China. Tentative program and schedule is now available. 5. Guangzhou OSC Conference

SABPA is proudly sponsoring the San Diego Hi-Tech Delegation to the Convention of Overseas Chinese Scholars (OSC) in Science & Technology at Guangzhou (Dec. 28 - 30, 2002). The delegation is led by Dr. Ming LI. More than 10 SABPA members are among the delegates. 6. Entrepreneurship in Biotech

Minneapolis based SURG II, Inc. has entered into an agreement to merge with privately-held Chiral Quest, LLC. Chiral Quest is a chemistry research and drug development company focused on commercializing proprietary, patented solutions to improve the manufacturing process for the pharmaceutical, biotechnology and fine chemical industries. The merged company, Chiral Quest Inc, will be a public traded independent chiral chemistry development firm and will be made to trade under the OTCBB symbol: CQST. The company was founded in October 2000 by Dr. Xumu Zhang, Associate Professor of Chemistry at Penn State University. Chiral Quest's technology facilitates the construction of chiral molecules eliminating the need for expensive separation of enantiomers. Chiral Quest is considered an emerging leader in the development of chemical catalysts used in the synthesis of desired isomers of chiral molecules.
