7. SUMMARY REPORT-SAN DIEGO HI-TECH DELEGATION TO GUANZHOU

From Xiaoling LI, a SABPA Member

The Fifth Convention of Overseas Chinese Scholars (OSC) in Science & Technology was held at Guangzhou from Dec. 28 to 30, 2002. The meeting attracted more than 2,200 overseas scholars and 1300 proposals. Biotech has been one of the major focuses of the meeting. Scholars from the biotech area participated Biotech/Pharmaceutical Forum, Biotech Project Introduction Meeting, University President Forum, and Tours to Guangzhou Hi-Tech Zone. The variety of activity introduced the current domestic environment in china for biotech development, valuable experiences from previously landed overseas scholars, and what types of biotech projects may likely to succeed in the near future. San Diego Hi-Tech Delegation, including 8-9 biotech professionals, have built numerous connections and met the investment group from the Guangzhou government.

From Ming LI, Chair of San Diego Hi-Tech Delegation

Our trip to attend Guangzhou convention is just beginning to build another hi-tech bridge between San Diego(USA) and China. Through this trip, we built our connection and networking between our members, between San Diego and China; also we got direct feeling about opportunities and challenges in China. It's very important that we can share our experience and networking with each other and build higher networking.

Considering some members are still in China, we plan to hold our first meeting on Feb 8. During that meeting, we can share our experience and focus on future events. Meanwhile, we plan to invite some delegation from China to attend our meeting. As always, we'd like to co-sponsor this meeting with main local Chinese associations.

After talking with some agencies and Chinese companies, they would like us to continue to build a hi-tech bridge between San Diego and China, so that both them and us can benefit from it. We are working on the best way to conduct this business and try to make it profitable.

For more information about San Diego Hi-Tech Delegation’s plan, please regularly check their discussion group: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/sd_cn_ht_bridge.
