2. Summary Reporting Meeting About SD Hi-tech Delegation to China

The San Diego Hi-tech Delegation (co-sponsored by SABPA) will hold a summary reporting meeting on Wednesday, Feb 19. A delegation from Suzhou will also attend the meeting to talk about potential cooperation in the future.

Schedule:

Location: Cafe China, 12664 Poway Rd, Poway, CA 92064. Tel: 858-486-8228.

Cost: $10/person

3. AAPS Workshop: Pharmaceutical Profiling in Drug Discovery for Lead Selection

Drug discovery and development is an increasingly difficult and expensive undertaking. Potentially useful drug candidates may be discarded prematurely or too much time may be spent on biological activity of drug candidates that are not likely to result in efficacious therapeutic agents. This workshop will focus on procedures for prediction, measurement, and application of compound properties to select and improve drug candidates. Improvement of drug-like properties can increase the efficiency of drug discovery and development.

American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists (AAPS) will hold the workshop on May 19-21, 2003, at Hanover Marriott, Whippany, NJ. In this workshop attendees will have the opportunity to:

4. The 10th SCBA International Symposium

The 10th SCBA International Symposium will be hold at Beijing International Convention Center from August 16 (Saturday)-21(Thursday), 2003. The objective of the symposium is to understand the molecular basis of human health, to enhance the progress of genomics/proteomics and biotechnology, to promote global collaborations and to cultivate a new generation of scientists.

The Society of Chinese Bioscientists in America (SCBA) is a non-profit organization founded in America by a few prominent and enthusiastic bioscientists in 1984. For more information about the symposium, please visit http://www.scba2003.org.

5. Biopharmaceutical Industry in China: WuXi PharmaTech

WuXi PharmaTech is China's leading chemistry-based pharmaceutical R&D firm and is widely considered the finest and best-equipped private R&D facility in China. Established in early 2001 as a Sino-US joint venture, PharmaTech currently occupies a 6000 M^2 lab space with state-of-the-art equipments and facilities. The company's mission is to pioneer a proprietary R&D technology platform in China and help China's pharmaceutical industry fully engage the global market.

To help achieve this goal, PharmaTech also targets the global chemistry outsourcing services market under its "Service-for-Product" business model. Relying upon the technical expertise and business experience of its founders, advisors and a 100-strong scientific team, PharmaTech offers global pharmaceutical/biopharmaceutical companies diverse R&D outsourcing services in combinatorial, medicinal and synthetic chemistry and allows them to take full advantage of the lower research costs in China. Currently, PharmaTech's rapidly expanding client list includes 26 leading pharmaceutical and biotech companies in the world.

In addition, PharmaTech is also a much sought-after co-development partner and licensee who can readily advance lead compounds from overseas through not only in-house optimization and development; but also regulatory procedures necessary to gain market approval from the State Drug Administration (SDA) in China. 6. Breakthrough Business Strategies by UCSD CONNECT

Breakthrough Business Strategies is a monthly program tailored to the unique needs and interests of high tech / life science companies. This program is designed to help your company accelerate through its stages of growth by delivering expert, in-depth content and by the valuable connections you'll make.

This month's topic for CONNECT's Breakthrough Business Series could save your company! When the venture capital community is not in your pocket you can still build and grow your business. "Show Me the Money: Alternate Sources of Funding for Technology and Biotechnology Companies" will identify new options and help you make the right strategic decision.

Produced in partnership with Heller Ehrman, the program will be held Feb. 19 from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. Registration will open this Wednesday, and with limited seating will likely close early! Cost for CONNECT members and new member applicants is $35, $50 for non-members. Registration and more informatio, please visit http://www.connect.org/programs/breakthrough/index.htm.

7. Invitrogen Research Tool Development Grant

The grant is intended to encourage investigators to discover and develop innovative tools for use in life science research, including discovery, development, and commercialization. It opens to new and established investigators working in academic institutions, not-for-profit organizations, and for-profit companies such as start-up biotechs. The program will provide awards ranging from approximately $25,000 to $100,000 per year, although longer durations and larger amounts will be considered. Grants will be announced quarterly and will focus on a different area of research each quarter.

This is the 2nd year of the Research Tool Development Grant Program. Proposals in the general area of cell biology are now being accepted (for the first trimester of 2003). Topics to be considered include amplification, arrays, biochemical assays, bioengineering, cell culture, cell lines, cell differentiation, cell-based assays, cloning, electrophoresis, enzymes, _expression, informatics, labeling & detection, modeling, molecular interactions, protein engineering, purification, reporters, separations, sequencing, transgenics and others.

The deadline for submitting proposals is April 1. For more information, please contact David Odelson at 800-955-6288 x66140 or grants@invitrogen.com.
