1. San Diego BioPharma Conference 2004 (05-15-04)

San Diego BioPharma Conference 2004 was held on Saturday May 15, 2004 at Marriott Hotel, La Jolla. The leading organizer is SABPA and co-organizers are SDCA and ACS-San Diego. The keynote speakers, Dr. Siegfried Reich (Pfizer) and Dr. Mitchell E. Reff (Biogen-Idec), focused on success stories of Viracept and Rituxan, two of the major drugs developed in San Diego. Around 400 people attended the meeting. Most participants are professionals from local institutes and biopharmaceutical companies. Dr. Lei Wang (UCSD) received the 2003 San Diego Bio-Pharma Award and delivered the award lecture. Other speakers are Professor Shi Huang and Mr. Sam Lou. The symposium Chairman is Dr. Weiguo Su from SABPA. More information about the conference can be found at www.sabpa.org.

2. San Diego is ranked No.1 of US biotech clusters

San Diego metropolitan area takes first place among the biotech clusters ranked by the Milken Institute in its first "America's Biotech and Life Science Clusters" study, released on June 7, 2004. The study ranked the metropolitan areas using 44 measurements within two broad categories: the biotech innovation pipeline, and the assessment of impact.

Following close behind San Diego are Boston, M.A., and Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill, N.C. The life-sciences index, which also includes pharmaceuticals and medical devices, was led by Boston, followed by San Diego and San Jose, Calif. 3. Medicine in the 21st Century Conference (07-24-04)

“Medicine in the 21st Century” tri-Conference will be held on July 24-27, 2004 at Shanghai International Convention Center, China. The conference will attract over 1000 participants and provide opportunity to interact with and to learn from the many global leaders of biopharmaceutical industry. Organizers are Society of Chinese Bioscientists in America, Shanghai Institutes for Biological Sciences-Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Modern Biotechnology & Pharmaceutical Industry Office of Shanghai Municipality.
