Nonclinical Research and Development (NCRD) is an integrated function with responsibility for characterizing nonclinical safety and disposition characteristics of the entire BMS Research and Development pipeline programs, with critical role from early discovery to submission of marketing authorization applications.  We utilize our deep expertise in toxicology/pathology, ADME, PK/PD, biopharmaceutics and Bioanalytics in all modalities (small and large molecules, cellular therapies and other novel modalities) to collaborate with peer R&D functions to identify and solve issues, discover high quality drug candidates, enable their clinical development and successful marketing authorizations across the globe.

The Veterinary Sciences (VS) department at BMS is part of the NCRD group. Our VS team in San Diego, CA (SGL) is seeking a Technical/Operations Supervisor to oversee the day-to-day operations of the San Diego rodent vivarium, provide daily veterinary assessments and treatments for laboratory animals, ensure compliance with regulations/guidelines, and maintain appropriate documentation.

 

Position Responsibilities

  • Assists with managing the daily operations of a rodent facility and specialty area(s) including BSL2 areas.  

  • Maintains full ownership of assigned area(s) of responsibility as a subject matter expert requiring minimal manager oversight. 

  • Responsible for upholding regulatory and welfare standards as they pertain to laboratory animal care, husbandry, facilities, and the overall animal macro environment. 

  • Uphold standards and provides guidance on daily operations, animal room preparation, environmental parameters, and relevant reports and takes corrective action as necessary. 

  • Reviews staff work assignments and ensures quality performance of assigned tasks.   

  • Collaborate with research and VS staff to optimize workflows for in vivo needs and appropriately plan for efficient program support. 

  • Participates in reviews and implementation of VS Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) according to the assigned review schedule. 

  • Assists with managing and developing assigned staff consistent with Company strategy and to achieve departmental objectives. 

  • Supervises the ordering, maintenance, use, disposition, and inventory of equipment and necessary supplies for animal care or laboratory activities.

  • Assists with major project/program activities in the department which may involve multi-site interactions. 

  • Recommends modification to procedures and implements change as necessary.

  • Maintains various clinical programs as outlined by the Attending Veterinarian (e.g. rodent health monitoring, Behavior and Environmental Enrichment, triage and documentation of animal health concerns, etc.).

    • Provides treatments and records observations for laboratory animals in our clinical records system under the guidance of a veterinarian

    • Performs specialized diagnostics to assist in the veterinary care program and undergo training to review and interpret basic diagnostic results.  

  • Collaborate with the veterinary and investigative staff on research projects, primarily pre-clinical study conduct; operate laboratory equipment and software applications used for collecting clinical data; provide support and training on technical procedures for investigative staff; understand the active research activities; and provide minor surgical assistance as needed.

  • Provides a high level of scientific and technical support to investigators.

 

Competencies – Knowledge, Skills, Abilities 

  • The individual is required to have knowledge of experimental methodology, facility operations, and knowledge of regulations and guidelines that govern animal care and use programs. 

  • Must have mastery of all VS SOPs and a good understanding of related departmental procedures (EH&S, Facilities, etc.) and proficiency in integrating this knowledge with strategic objectives.  

  • Participates in developing team building skills and demonstrated leadership and managerial abilities. 

  • Must have a solid foundation in the care and maintenance of laboratory rodent species as well as the regulatory requirements for maintaining those animals.  

  • Must also have a clear understanding of accrediting guidelines (The Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals) and AAALAC for facility operations. 

  • This individual must be proficient in conducting basic/routine clinical veterinary and technical research support procedures under minimal supervision.

  • Must have an excellent understanding of the biology and be proficient in handling various laboratory animal species.

  • Must have experience with veterinary procedures including PO, SQ, IM, IV and IP treatments as well as sample collection in rodents; use of inhalant and injectable anesthetics; aseptic technique; perioperative care; and necropsy.

  • Must have a good understanding of research animal facility operations to include animal welfare practices, husbandry procedures, enrichment programs, and applicable regulations.

 

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree and 5+ years of academic and / or industry experience OR

  • Master’s Degree and 3+ years of academic and / or industry experience OR

  • Ph.D. or equivalent advanced degree in the Life Science with no experience

 

Preferred Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor of Science (BS) in life sciences or an Associates with at least 2 years of supervisory experience or proven leadership experience.

  • Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) is preferred

  • Individual must have AALAS certification at the Laboratory Animal Technician (LAT) level. 

  • This position requires on-call/on-site responsibilities for evening and weekends

  • Must have an excellent understanding of the biology and proper care of laboratory animal species and a history of consistent, sustained, high-level performance typically attained with 3-5 years relevant experience in a laboratory animal facility

  • Should have an understanding of the site processes and key contacts such as Medical, HR, investigators, EHS and Facilities required to coordinate project-related activities. 

  • Must have an excellent understanding of research animal facility operation, to include animal welfare practices, husbandry procedures, animal health and veterinary care, enrichment programs, and applicable regulations/accreditations (AAALAC and site/departmental SOPs). 

 

The starting compensation for this job is a range from $97,000-$123,000, plus incentive cash and stock opportunities (based on eligibility).

 

The starting pay rate takes into account characteristics of the job, such as required skills and the where the job is performed.

 

Final individual compensation will be decided based on demonstrated experience.
