2. SABPA New Year Party (01/24/09)
The Saturday night of 24th SABPA committee members, friends, and family members gathered at the Valley Club of Carlsbad to celebrate Chinese New Year, and another successful year of the organization. Set from the very beginning the mission of SABPA to create values to our members and community, SABPA enjoyed a steady growth in 2008 by fully utilizing the strengths and motivation of leadership teams and volunteers as well.
The smooth and effective transfer of leadership roles from Dr. Hui Li to Dr. Xiangming Fang (San Diego Chapter) and from Dr. Ying Zhao to Dr. Hengchu Cao (OC/LA Chapter) was well received. We appreciated dedicated contributions in the past two years Drs Hui Li and Ying Zhao had devoted as Chapter President that collectively brought SABPA to what we are today. Going forward, we believe our new leaders will have strong supports from all of our members as well.

4. SABPA Science & Technology Forum VII (San Diego Chapter, 03/21/09)
Biomarker, Pharmacogenomics and Personalized Medicine
Date: March 21, 2009 (Saturday)
Location: Institute of Americas, UCSD (directions available at www.sabpa.org)
Pharmaceuticals industry has been operating under the paradigm of "one drug fits all" for many decades. However, many drugs are often ineffective in many of the patients, and could even cause serious adverse effects in certain patient populations. These obstacles, in addition to tougher FDA review and rapidly evaporating pipeline, have put unprecedented challenges to the drug developers, and will inevitably push the industry to make a paradigm shift towards "right drug to right patient", so called personalized medicine. The topic of SABPA Science & Technology Forum VII will focus on recent advances in the development of biomarkers and pharmacogenomics to realize the promise of personalized medicine. Experts from both academia and industry will present overview as well as specific examples of using rapid advance in high density microarray technology, genome-wide RNA expression profiling and DNA genotyping to identify novel genomic biomarkers, and to predict drug efficacy and adverse effects. These approaches are poised to dramatically shorten the development cycle, increase the efficacy and safety of new drugs, and ultimately deliver the right medicine tailored to the right patients.

6. Genengnews Report on 4th SABPA Pacific Forum (11/08/08)
Cautious Optimism Prevails for Chinese Biotechnology
Government's Commitment and Return of "Sea Turtles" Buoy the Industry
The Chinese word for "crisis" is composed of two characters—one for danger and one for opportunity. That analogy sums up, not only the current global situation, but the situation for biotechs in China too, according to speakers at the recent "Pacific Forum on Life Science Alliances," sponsored by the Sino-American Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Professionals Association (SABPA).
