Pharmaceutical industry has been operating under the paradigm of “one drug fits all” for many decades. However, few drugs offer universal efficacy in all the patient population, and some even cause serious adverse effects in certain patient groups. These obstacles, in addition to the tougher FDA review standards and rapidly evaporating pipelines, have put unprecedented challenges on the drug industry, and inevitably push the industry to make increasing shift towards “the right drug to the right patient”, i.e. personalized medicine. The topic of SABPA Science & Technology Forum VII will focus on recent advances in the development of biomarkers, pharmacogenomics and personalized medicine. Experts from both the academia and industry will present overviews as well as specific examples of identifying novel genomic biomarkers, predicting drug efficacy and adverse effects, and using modern technologies such as high density microarray technology, genome-wide RNA expression profiling and DNA genotyping. These approaches are poised to dramatically shorten the drug development cycle, improve drug efficacy and safety, and ultimately deliver the right medicines tailored to the right patients.

Due to the recent economic crisis, there has been a large number of lay-offs in San Diego biotech. To help our members and the biotech community, SABPA will set up a job fair at the Forum simultaneously. We have invited recruiters and biotech companies who have active job openings to set up tables at the forum as a free service to our members and recruiters. We hope the job fair will provide the opportunity for our members who are looking for jobs to talk directly with the recruiters and biotech companies.
