1. The 7th SABAP Science & Technology Forum (3/21/2009, UCSD)
The 7th SABAP Science & Technology Forum was held at the Institute of Americas, UCSD on March 21, 2009. This symposium attracted more than 200 attendees from San Diego and Orange County. The Forum was focused on some of the hottest topics in today’s biomedical field: biomarker, pharmacogenomics and personalized medicine. Following the kick-off by Dr. Sui-Xiong Cai, Chair of the SABPA Science &Technology Committee, the keynote speaker, Dr. Nicholas J. Schork from Scripps Genomic Medicine, presented an invigorating lecture on the dramatic progress of human genome research, the hapmap project and genome-wide association studies over the last few years. Dr. Schork also discussed the resulting substantial impact on pharmacogenomics, an emerging field that has reshaped the landscape of medical field and has already prompted the FDA to consider re-labeling some of the commonly prescribed drugs. Dr. Dominic Spinella from Pfizer Inc then highlighted several key concepts and issues of applying biomarkers in drug development, especially in the oncology area. Representing Rule Based Medicine, Dr. Dominic Eisinger introduced Multi-Analyte Profiles (MAPS), an enabling technology with potential applications in protein biomarker discovery. After the break, Dr. Wen Luo from Ligand Pharmaceuticals presented a case study on applying genome-wide association to identification of genomic biomarkers for predicting patient response to bexarotene in non small cell lung cancer treatment. Dr. Michael Nerenberg from Genoptix then described a broad range of products and services available at Genoptix, which may facilitate biomarker studies and the development of diagnostic tests. Mr. Bill Harten, the final speaker of the Forum and a newcomer to the biomedical field, illustrated UNIConnect’s software and its ability to be easily customized and configured by computer-naïve end users, therefore representing an ideal solution to the evolving IT demands in personalized medicine. In the end, Dr. Xiangming Fang, President of SABPA, acknowledged the committee members, volunteers and the audience who chose to spend their Saturday participating and made the Forum a success. Attendees enjoyed top level presentations and networking opportunities. Many sponsors had active interactions with visitors and made wide business contacts for future follow-up.
2. The 4th SABPA OC/LA Annual Biomedical Forum (March 28, 2009)
The 4th SABPA OC/LA Annual Biomedical Forum was successfully held on March 28, 2009 with high-caliber speakers and full attendance from Orange County, Los Angeles and San Diego. Dr. Hengchu Cao, President of SABPA OC/LA, gave a brief introduction about the mission and vision of SABPA. Dr. Bill Tang, Associate Dean of Research at Henry Samuli School of Engineering, UC Irvine then made a warm welcome speech. Immediately following was the first session on Medical Device Innovation. The session was led by Rob Michiels, Chief Operating Officer of CoreVlave, which was recently acquired by Medtronic for more than 750 million dollars. Dr. Peter Chen presented a comprehensive overview of the cardiac rhythm management devices, neuromodulation breakthroughs and the latest innovation in integrated devices pioneered at the most recently formed St Jude Medical Center for Innovation and Strategic Collaboration. Industry innovation heavyweight, Stanton Rowe, Chief Scientific Officer of Edwards Lifescience showcased an impressive audio/video illustration introducing the world’s most disruptive technologies that truly revolutionized the society, particularly in medical care. His review of cardiac care from early development of open heart surgery to modern interventional approach to treat heart valve disease was inspirational. Following a short break, Dr. Alex Qiu introduced the next session on Trends in Global Biotech and Pharmaceutical Industry. Dr. Mitchell Brin, Senior Vice President at Allergan and Clinical Professor of Neurology at UC Irvine, presented the fascinating history and dramatic achievements of the Development of BOTOX. Dr. David Ke, Executive Scientific Director at Amgen, provided a comprehensive lecture on Transforming Basic Science to Drug Discovery by the Story of Sclerosteosis And Development of Anti-Sclerostin Monoclonal Antibody, the emerging blockbuster drug. After lunch, the Forum resumed with the first afternoon session on Global Business Operations, moderated by Scott Lopez of Biotronik. Sabing Lee of Knobbe, Martens, Olson & Bear, discussed the essentials of Intellectual Property in Commercialization of Life Sciences/Medical Devices. Cliff Guan, Senior Manager at Deloitte, reviewed Practical and Effective Tax Strategies by Surveying the Business Landscape in US and China. Dr. James Shen, Compliance Officer from FDA LA Office drew applause from audience with a lively presentation on the FDA requirements and regulations concerning medical and pharmaceutical products. Dr. Quanyin Gao of Irvine Pharmaceutical Services presented systematic approach to extractable and leachables, followed by a web review by Robert Frasier, Senior Representative from North America Representative Office of Shenzhen, on Shenzhen’s achievement in attracting business development in opening biomedical and biotech enterprises in China. Dr. Paul DeRidder of Crystal Cove Capital moderated a VC panel on Achievable Success in Venture Funding, with leading VC firms in California. Dr. Sofie Qiao, Founder of Lead Therapeutics, and Darin Chen, Managing Director of Hillcrest Venture Partners shared their successful stories of founding companies and answered challenging questions on Legal Risk Assessment for Venture Funding. Last but not least, Drs. Shouyan Lee and Chen Chen, representing China delegate from Suzhou Industrial Park (SIP), impressed the audience with beautifully landscaped park design and superb infrastructure plan to attract business innovation in SIP bioBay. Dr. Zhongping Chen concluded the conference with inviting words calling for active community support and participation in SABPA. She was formerly Executive Director of Pharmaceutical Development at Vical Incorporated, where she patented several novel methods for the production of clinical grade DNA for use in gene therapy and DNA vaccines. Prior to joining Vical, Dr. Marquet held management positions at Amylin Pharmaceuticals, Protein Polymer Technologies, Syntro Corporation and Transgene. Dr. Marquet is a member of the board of Directors of BIOCOM and UCSD Athena. Dr. Marquet holds a Ph.D in Biochemical Engineering from the University of Toulouse/INSA, France. Dr. Marquet has received numerous prizes throughout her career. 6. TBI journal website is launched.
Trends in Bio/Pharmaceutical Industry (TBI), is a scientific journal focused on the latest discoveries, innovations, development and trends in the various fields of life sciences, especially in research institutes and pharmaceutical and biotechnology industry. Authors of TBI are mostly, but not limited to, scientific, legal and financial professional and entrepreneurs in US with Chinese heritage. The targeted readers of TBI are researchers, scientists, entrepreneurs and senior managers in biopharmaceutical industry. TBI is published quarterly both online and in hard copies.
