The Principal Scientist or Associate Director, Chemistry will be responsible for leading and contributing to the success of Crinetics’ growing drug discover projects. This individual will be an integral part of the company’s efforts to discover and develop small molecule therapeutics for rare endocrine disorders and endocrine-related cancers. This is a unique opportunity to work with a proven and well-funded drug discovery and development team in a small company environment in the heart of San Diego’s biotechnology community. (Position will be filled at level commensurate with experience.)

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

These may include but are not limited to:

 

  • Lead/contribute to cross-functional teams in defining, aligning, and implementing strategies for hit identification, lead optimization and delivery of development candidate molecules for any given current or future new project
  • Demonstrate inter-disciplinary knowledge of drug discovery (in vitro/in vivo pharmacology, ADME, PK/PD, and toxicology) be able to assess drug-ability and use this knowledge to influence project strategy
  • Conceive and apply an integrated medicinal chemistry strategy and appropriately prioritizes resources to optimally meet project goals
  • Participate in nominating new drug targets and establishing new drug discovery programs
  • Direct a compound lead optimization program while maintaining lab presence
  • Creatively and independently develop and progress SAR on a given medicinal chemistry project
  • Prepare and organize data for presentation. Present written and oral reports to management and cross-functional teams. Communicate research efforts at scientific meetings
  • Coordinate chemistry activities at external CROs
  • Provide mentorship and proactively support the professional development of line reports and colleagues

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

 

  • PhD in synthetic organic chemistry
  • Principal Scientist: PhD with 12 years of experience (including industry) 
  • Associate Director: PhD with 10+ years of industry experience in medicinal chemistry
  • Knowledgeable in all aspects of drug discovery from target discovery through to late preclinical development
  • Strong track record of achievement in synthesis of complex molecules with state-of-the-art knowledge of modern synthetic methodologies and analytical and purification techniques
  • Proven track record of creative thinking and consistent delivery as demonstrated by patent/publication/presentation records
  • Highly skilled synthetic chemist in the area of methodology development and multistep synthesis with demonstration of excellent problem-solving skills
  • Strong knowledge of techniques related to purification and characterization of organic compounds
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, enthusiasm, integrity, self-motivation, strong interpersonal skills, ability to interact within a multidisciplinary team
  • Comfortable working in a highly innovative team environment
  • Responds well to scientific challenge and applies significant rigor to their own work

 

TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED:

 

Equipment:   PC, scanners, voice mail and e-mail systems, and common office machines, or ability to be trained.  Knowledge of other equipment required: HPLC-MS, NMR

 

Software Knowledge:  Windows, MS Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint).  Knowledge of other software required: ChemDraw, Scifinder

 

EFFORT REQUIRED/ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:

 

Physical Activities:  On a continuous basis, sit at desk for a long period of time; intermittently answer telephone and write or use a keyboard to communicate through written means.  Some walking and lifting up to 20 lbs. may be required.  The noise level in the work environment is usually low to moderate.  The physical demands described above are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions and responsibilities of this job.  Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions and responsibilities.

 

Laboratory Activities, if applicable:  Biology and chemical laboratory environments experience needed.  Environmental health and safety requirements also apply.

 

TRAVEL:

 

Travel may be required up to 5% of your time.
